Our program is designed to give you a strong foundation in basic design theory and an in-depth knowledge of industry standard software. The projects that you develop in these classes will provide a strong indication of your performance during your first year and your preparation level for more advanced courses.

The following should be included in the portfolio that you turn in for review:

  • Projects from:
    • 3D Animation Students
      • CART 1301 – Introduction to CART
      • CART 1302 – Digital Imaging
      • CART 2301 – 3D I: Modeling
    • Graphic Design Students
      • CART 1301 - Introduction to CART
      • CART 1302 - Digital Imaging
      • CART 1380 - Foundations of Digital Design
      • CART 1390 - Typography
  • A selection of 3-5 pieces from:
    • ARTS 1301 – Drawing I
    • ARTS 2357 – Photography (in a folder)
    • CART 3325 - Gesture for Animators (if taken)
  • A current transcript should be included with the application

The primary criteria used in making selections for admission into the Graphic Design program will be the work presented in the portfolio from CART 1301, 1302, 1380, & 1390.

The primary criteria used in making selections for admission into the 3D Animation track will be the work presented in the portfolio from CART 1301, 1302, & 2301. For 3D Animation Concentration candidates, you may include other character designs, animations, storyboards, or renderings done independently or for a previous class. Projects from CART 3321 - History of Animation are not required as part of the portfolio. The grade from the class will be the main assessment of the course.

All work must be submitted in portfolio case with your name on the outside of the portfolio.

Portfolios can be turned in to The Office of the Dean of the School of Interactive Media and Design (Admin Building, Room 112) during Finals Week beginning on May 3rd. Portfolios must be turned in by 4 PM, Thursday, May 6, 2010.

You may pick up your portfolio from the same location on Monday, May 10, 2010.

There will be an evaluation sheet in each portfolio when you pick it up. This sheet will have a 0-4 “ranking” on each of the evaluation criteria and will inform you whether or not you have been admitted to the CGA@UIW major and cleared to take track CART courses .

A letter will follow confirming your status.

Portfolios will be evaluated on how well each student has demonstrated the following:

  1. Understanding of Design and Aesthetics
    • visual organization, composition
    • knowledge of and use of typography
    • understanding of color, value, and texture
    • attention to detail
       
  2. Visual problem solving skills
    • creativity, imaginative thinking
    • idea generation
    • development and improvement of concept
       
  3. Skills
    • craft and hand skills
    • drawing, observation
    • technical skill with tools and materials
    • quality of execution, care for the appropriate presentation of your work
       
  4. Work ethic
    • In addition to your projects, there will be an assessment of class preparation and class participation
    • consistent performance
    • as reflected in class preparation
    • participation and interest in your own work and that of others
       
  5. Overall quality of visual presentation
     
  6. Critical analysis and research skills

Secondary criteria used in the selection process will be an assessment of work from ARTS 1301, and 2375 and your overall success in other University courses.
